Matcha Tasting Workshop

Discover the depth and beauty of matcha through the practice of usucha—the “thin tea” style most commonly enjoyed in Japan. This workshop is recommended for intermediate tea drinkers who have some experiences with Usucha, and want to refine their palate. For a more beginner-friendly, interactive workshop, we'd recommend our matcha latte workshop.

Together, we’ll explore:

  • What is Usucha? Learn how usucha differs from koicha (thick tea) and why this lighter, frothier preparation is the most approachable way to enjoy matcha.

  • Cultivar & Terroir: Taste a curated selection of matcha from different tea regions and cultivars, noting how origin and growing practices shape flavor.

  • Brewing Technique: Practice whisking matcha in the usucha style, noting the water temperature, ratio, and texture.

  • Sensory Exploration: Develop and learn to communicate your own tasting vocabulary by identifying sweetness, umami, bitterness, aroma, and mouthfeel across the different samples.

This is not a formal tea ceremony—it’s a guided tasting designed to slow you down, heighten your senses, and help you experience matcha in a deeper way. By the end, you’ll not only have enjoyed multiple samples of usucha from different tea estate, but also gain the confidence to prepare and appreciate matcha at home.

Whether you’re simply curious about matcha, or you’re looking to expand your understanding of Japanese tea cultivation, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of usucha. Light snacks provided.

Location: near Olympic Village Station Canada Line (5min - 8min walk from the station).
Free & Paid parking spots also available nearby.
