Illuminating the Spirit of the New Year

Chokudai 勅題 is a Poetry Theme appointed by the Emperor, and this year’s theme is “Mei 明”, evoking brightness, a reveal for hope, and clarity. 

This Chokudai matcha’s name is Unmei no Midori (雲明の翠). The name embodies the spirit of wabi-sabi, where beauty lies in imperfection, and combines it with a sense of quiet nobility.

Unmei 雲明: a gentle, glowing light filtering through an overcast sky, softly illuminating the serene, luminous clouds.

Midori (翠): green. In this context, the shade of green for this matcha is not overly bright, yet has a soft glowing green expressing humble and wabi-sabi philosophy.

Flavor Profiles: toasted sunflower seeds, a sophiscated balance of umami, fresh leaves, and a hint of green apple, ended with a sparkling crisp finish.
